Supply chain waste is a strategic issue affecting business sustainability, costs, reputation and relationships. Its importance continues to grow for consumers, customers, employees and shareholders.
This breakout helps participants root out supply chain waste and save money. Retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers share detailed case studies showing how they have worked together to prevent substantial amounts of waste. It addresses decisions about capacity, service levels, stock life, range, packaging design and management information.
Speakers describe their ECR UK work, which includes recruiting 34 companies to support supply chain waste reduction targets and report achievements change by change. A wholesaler and manufacturer reveals how reductions in waste are being achieved throughout the supply chain by taking collaborative inventory management to the next level; helping with the ‘up stream’ ordering of product.
Another case study showes how a retailer and manufacturer of ready meals have increased forecast accuracy by six per cent and reduced packaging material by 20 per cent and manufacturing waste by 33 per cent.
Speakers: Gavin Chappell, Asda Walmart; Cath Marston, Booker; James Tupper, IGD; Maryann Denfhy, Muller; Andrew Davenport, Nestlé; Nick Jelly, Tesco; Simon Bailey, Unilever; Andy Dawe, WRAP.
Facilitated by IGD.

ECRA announces the launch of an Industry Toolkit for Shelf Ready Packaging

The Board of Efficient Consumer Response Australasia (ECRA) recognised that there was the potential for a multiplication of shelf ready packaging standards within the Australian and New Zealand food and grocery industry leading to a risk of proliferation of contradictory guidelines, which would endanger the initial vision of bringing more value to the consumer.

The development of a set of common industry standards and guidelines aims to assist retailers, suppliers, wholesalers and packaging companies implement sustainable alternate packaging solutions. Through the publication of the Retail Ready Packaging – A focus on shelf ready packaging an Industry Toolkit guidance is provided on how to look at the introduction of shelf ready packaging within your organisation.

The practical approach of the Toolkit will benefit trading partners and provide a framework for open dialogue, avoiding prescribed solutions or technical specifications.

Since the publication in 2006 of the Retail Ready Packaging – A Focus on Shelf Ready Packaging an Industry Toolkit significant changes (such as global economic slowdown; commodity price increases; focus on sustainability; expansion of discount retail outlets; oil price peaks etc) have taken place in the Australian and New Zealand markets. Responding to these changes with the ability to adapt and develop agile responsive supply chains is increasingly important to food and grocery manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and wholesalers.
Many of these factors have had an indirect impact on the implementation and adoption of Retail Ready Packaging (RRP) solutions into the market. However it is as a result of inadequate in-store execution; a lack of a clear whole of chain business case; and cost complexity that wide spread adoption of RRP has not been evident.  ECRA has updated the guidelines and continues to work with retail and supplier organisations to ensure alignment where possible is achieved.

As much as 13% of all products are significantly or critically damaged by the time they reach the shelf. By understanding the supply chain end-to-end we can improve the situation.

Manufacturers and retailers have worked together in many areas to reduce total levels of shrinkage. However, new research suggests that so far they have been unaware of high levels of packaging damage.

The 2003 ECR Europe publication Shrinkage – A Collaborative Approach to Reducing Stock Loss in the Supply Chain stated that: ‘There is an increasing recognition of the scale and extent of the problem of shrinkage in the FMCG sector. In addition, some of the consequences of shrinkage, such as out of stocks and restricted product availability, impact directly upon shopper satisfaction. Reducing shrinkage can also increase sales’.

That report promoted the adoption of the ‘Shrinkage Road Map’ – a simple but effective methodology designed to deliver real benefits to the companies who use it to tackle their shrinkage problems. The report also set out the importance of incorporating this approach into a shrinkage reduction strategy that is itself fully integrated into the overall corporate policy of the company; thus giving shrinkage management the same weight and importance as other functions within the business such as sales, distribution and marketing....

The UK has been one of the countries at the forefront of developing new secondary packaging solutions to improve in-store efficiency. Sometimes this is called Shelf Ready Packaging although SRP is a subset of the full range of possible solutions known as Retail Ready Packaging or RRP.

A definition of the different classes of RRP is available here: Retail Ready Packaging Defined

From 2006 to 2008 ECR UK produced a series of guidelines and interactive tools to help promote end to end supply chain efficiency by finding the right solution for each product and considering both cost and environmental impact.

There are ten guides in total and all can be downloaded for free from the ECR UK section of the IGD website.

- le transport (les modes, les difficultés, le remplissage des camions, …) ;
- les unités d'expédition (palettes hétérogènes, palettes sandwichs, …) ;
- les supports de palettisation (mode de gestion, échange de palettes, …) ;
RTI, …) ;

Shelf Ready Packaging appears to be one potential solution to address store operations efficiency, shelf replenishment and product availability, visibilty and access. There is currently a multiplication of local and proprietary SRP initiatives in Europe. There is a risk of proliferation of contradictory guidelines, which would endanger the initial vision of bringing more value to the consumer.

This ECR Europe blue book provides guidance on how to look at the introduction of Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP) collaboratively. It is the culmination of 11 months of work by the ECR Europe Shelf Ready Packaging project team, where manufacturers, ECR national representatives and packaging suppliers worked jointly with retailers, ably supported by Accenture.[CUT]

The new blue book provides:

  • a set of guiding principles,

  • a business case methodology to evaluate the potential of SRP and help find the most appropriate solution,

  • functional requirements to ensure a certain degree of harmonisation of SRP across European retailers
    guidance on how to make sure that SRP is well implemented in the store.

  • A set of supporting tools to apply the methodology.

The project co-chairs, Xavier Hua of Carrefour and Bernard Fradin of Kraft Foods are convinced that “this blue book represents a sound basis for further  retailer-manufacturer collaboration on Shelf Ready Packaging and provides the right balance for delivering value to the consumer”.
