Looking around Europe for the best practices in supply chain management, one thing in particular is seen to be enabling further reductions in inventory, transport costs and CO2 emissions – supply chain consolidation. This session focuses on this topic and show what is new.
Companies participating in the the Future Supply Chain group of the Consumer Goods Forum show how they explored the possibilities of a cross-border, multi-modal consolidation using road and railway transport to ship goods from and to eastern Europe. Participants in the Dutch Dynalog project are building a cross-chain control centre that uses the internet to manage an optimised consolidation process where supply and demand of transport and warehouse capacity are matched. Finally, fresh fish supplier Meralliance demonstrates what opportunities supply chain collaboration can bring to small and medium sized enterprises and how they, with ECR France, seized them.
Speakers: Dennis Wereldsma, Capgemini; Xavier Hua, ECR Europe; Tom Tillemans, Heinz; Andrea Szucsany, Kraft Foods; Tim Beckmann, Kühne & Nagel; Laurent Jamier, Meralliance; Fokke van der Veer, Unilever; Tom de Kok, University Eindhoven/Dinalog

This breakout session explores new inventory strategies aimed to decrease end-to-end inventory, from supplier warehouse to retailer shelf, taking into account retailer/supplier inter-dependencies and overcoming the traditional unilateral approach while maintaining speed to shelf, high availability rates and an overall sustainable business performance.
Delegates will see the latest ECR inventory optimisation project results where 16 companies from the consumer goods sector helped to identify new approaches in reducing supply chain inventories collaboratively. A conceptual framework will be presented as a roadmap from the initial idea to the implementation of an improvement action plan in an FMCG environment.
This session will provide delegates with a new perception of inventory in the supply chain. Learn how both sides, retailer and supplier, can benefit equally from collaborative approaches.[CUT]
Speakers: Sören Hagen, Andreas Kick, 4flow; Antonio Bianchi, Colgate Palmolive; Eberhard Braun, Metro Systems; Ettore Piccirillo, Unilever.
Facilitated by ECR Europe and 4flow.

Where do you want to be in 2020? Do you know how consumers will shop in 10 years? Can you guarantee sustainable sourcing for agricultural products? Do you know how to survive a negative Facebook viral fan page?
The answers to these and other questions will determine how prepared the industry is to succeed in the new decade.
The 2020 Future Value Chain initiative explores the opportunities and challenges that will face the consumer goods industry over the next decade and identifies the activities that need to be put in place today to ensure the industry is well positioned for 2020.
Delegates learn about the trends that will have the greatest impact on the industry, the objectives on which the industry should focus and the tactics that will help achieve these objectives. The results of the Future Value Chain programme represent the collective thinking of almost 250 executives, from local and international retailers and manufacturers, third-party partners, academia and industry associations from around the globe.
Industry leaders who have participated in this global programme will share their thoughts and experiences.
Facilitated by The Consumer Goods Forum and Capgemini.

How rapidly things change! Just a few months ago most business were making plans on the assumption of continued robust prosperity. But the world's financial crisis has made mincemeat of all that. Recessions looms, you can almost hear the sound of people battening down the hatches, withdrawing their horns and preparing for the worst rather the best.
There are some silver linings though. Many consumer good suppliers and retailers provide the daily necessaries and affordable luxuries that fare relatively well in recession.

Firms are under pressure to prove their environmental credentials. Now a win-win way of weaving ‘green’ considerations into business decisions is emerging.

Traditional retail supply chains work according to the motto better, centralised and distant”. Each firm operating within these supply chains seeks to optimise its own activities and buffer itself against others upstream and downstream. And customers are strangers, walking anonymously through the store selecting from what is available.
Well, get ready for a complete U-turn – a change in direction which takes us to a very different destination.
The motto of tomorrow’s leading-edge supply chains will be “fresher, simpler and closer”. Products will flow quickly and seamlessly down value chains which encompass many different firms, in direct response to consumer orders. Consumers themselves will no longer be strangers.
Far from it, they will be an integral, crucial and value-adding link in the whole process.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies can place demands all the way along the supply chain. To cope with the increasing diversity of CSR initiatives, we will be considering how co-operation between retailers and brand manufacturers, via mutual recognition of programmes, can help harmonise those standards, avoid audit fatigue and highlight the CSR performance of suppliers –thus creating greater value for consumers.

Reusable Transport Items (RTI), crates, pallets and roll cages, represent the "Nuts and Bolts" of the European Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Supply Chain. At the end of the previous millennium an increasing variety of equipment, managed in a variety of different ways, was used to handle an expanding catalogue of products, all with the aim of reducing supply chain costs for individual elements within the total supply chain. But different incompatible management systems for RTI have led to market fragmentation and supply chain inefficiencies - standardised methods are needed to organise their distribution and return.
RTI are considered as assets, which need to be tracked & traced through the supply chain to enable their efficient use for all involved parties. RTI may have commercial implications if they are subjected to deposits or fees related to their use. For invoicing purposes RTI have to be accounted separately. To do this, a unique identification of RTI and standardised communication of the related information is required. This report explains how the EAN.UCC-system should be used for this purpose.

Integrated Suppliers is a concept for improving the part of the supply chain between manufacturers and their tiers of suppliers of ingredients, raw materials and packaging. By sharing information both parties are able to exercise judgement on costs, quantities and timing of deliveries and production in order to streamline the product flow and to move to a collaborative relationship. The goal of this booklet is to promote the application of the key concepts of Integrated Suppliers in the supply chain. Based on existing case studies spread over Europe and supply chain theory it is demonstrated that suppliers play an important role in "working together to fulfil consumer wishes better, faster and at less costs".
